The History of Basil

Basil is said to be native to Central Africa, South Asia, and Southeast Asia, with there being many different kinds of basil. The term is said to come from the latin term basilius and the Greek term Basilikon Phyton. Traces of basil have been found in mummies in Ancient Egypt. According to the Ancient Egyptians and Ancient Greeks, it is said that the herb helps ensure a safe journey to the afterlife.

Some Medieval European doctors thought that it could be used to cure the venom of Basilisk too. It is the holiest plant in Hinduism, which is where Holy Basil gets its name and in African folklore, it is said to ease scorpion stings. Today it is used in Greek Orthofox church and in Portugal as a symbol of love. What do you like using it for?
