Cayenne peppers are said to originate from the Cayenne region of French Guiana, which today is a part of France still. The word cayenne is said to originate in the Old Tupi Language once spoken in Brazil. Ironically enough, one of the first uses of the phrase “cayenne pepper” in English was by a famous botanist, named Nicholas Culpeper. The capital city of French Guiana is also named Cayenne.
