Maghrebi Mint Tea, also known as Moroccan mint tea and Algerian mint tea, is gunpowder green tea with spearmint leaves.
Usually sugar is added. Gunpowder style tea was first introduced to North Africa by the British in the 18th and 19th centuries. The incorporation of mint was said to start from Morroco to the rest of North Africa.
Ahmed Bin Mubarek, officer of Sultan Suleiman, became the first master of tea in the Makhzen. Later in the late 19th century, some figures, like Muhammad Bin Abdul-Kabir Al-Kattani tried to get his adherents to boycott tea, as they were imported by the Europeans. In Morroco the tea ceremony is an important aspect of social life. I like the refreshing taste and slightly cooling quality the mint gives to the tea. What’s your favorite type of mint tea?
